Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which is known as toilet infection is capable of causing infertility in men and women.
A gyneacologist with Federal Medical Centre, Bida, Dr.Yakubu Ghana, made this known while speaking to journalists in his office. He said the disease was more common among women than men and that if not properly treated could cause infertility.
Dr. Ghana said that PID is usually caused by bacteria found in the virgina and the cervix , saying “it can be transmitted through sexual intercourse and exposure to semen during menstruation and ovulation.”
He said PID was more common among women due to bacteria that pass through the openings of the cervix into the uterus and fallopian tubes.
He said symptoms of PID included “pains in passing urine ,irregular virginal discharge, abdominal pain, fever among others.”
He said toilet infection had contributed to the high rate of infertility the world over adding that the ways of preventing the disease included abstinence from unprotected sex and regular medical check.
