A total of 90 students from various schools within and outside the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have participated in two-day programme in Abuja organized by the Movement for Islamic Culture and Awareness (MICA) meant to prepare them for aduldhood.
The chapter coordinator, Abuja, Movement for Islamic Culture and Awareness, Idris Tiamiyu, said that the gesture was to engage teenagers and prepare them for adulthood.
He said the programme with the theme “The World Through My Window,” gave an insight on how to help youth and emerging adults build a foundation for a successful transition to adult life.
“We are doing this programme for teenagers. The reason is that there are many activities out there for the adult and these are the people that will take over in the future. So we want to make sure that they are engaged positively at this stage of their lives and they are also being prepared for adulthood,” he said.
He said that students from various states including Sokoto, Kwara and Niger had participated with the consent of their parents.
He said students acquired knowledge on how to manage many new responsibilities in life.
Another MICA member, Mariam Biliaminu-Oladosu said another aim of the event was to teach teenagers more about religion and how to inter-relate with their peers outside the school environment.
She described the programme as an avenue for the teenagers to share some of their challenges particularly those they were unable to share with their parents in an informal setting.
One of the participants from Noble Hall Leadership Academy for Girls, Zainab Abdulbasit, said that she learnt more about her religion.
“I learnt the meaning of some Qur’anic verses and self confidence,” she said.
Another participant from Capital Science Academy, Abuja, Taufiq Ajibola, said, “I obtained knowledge about my religion, self confidence and how to be a good leader.”
The highlights of the programme included, poem, prayer, physical module (gender specific), interactive feedback, memorization, emotional module series and personal development among others.
