The caucus also called for a thorough investigation, prosecution, and punishment of all individuals and government agencies involved in the minors’ ordeal, as well as other youths who participated in the protest in August.

The statement, co-signed by Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda, Minority Whip Dr. Ali Isa J.C., Deputy Minority Leader R. Aliyu Madaki, and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, emphasized the necessity for accountability and compassionate support in addressing this incident, which has sparked national outrage and international concern.

The caucus asserted that anyone involved in the 95-day detention of these youths—time that could have been spent on their education

While acknowledging President Tinubu’s decision to release the protesters, the Minority Caucus urged a comprehensive investigation and accountability for those responsible for the youths’ detention, describing the actions taken against them as “despicable, callous, and inhumane.” The caucus asserted that anyone involved in the 95-day detention of these youths—time that could have been spent on their education or vocational pursuits—should face consequences. They believe that holding these individuals accountable would serve as a deterrent against similar actions in the future.

The caucus also expressed concern over the psychological impact and potential health issues the youths may have experienced during their detention. They urged the government to provide therapeutic support and medical care to assist the youths in reintegrating with their families. Furthermore, the caucus advocated for reparation packages to help alleviate the hardship and emotional distress endured by the youths and their families during this unlawful incarceration.

Recognizing the psychological trauma and health challenges the children may have faced, we appeal for quality reformatory therapy sessions and medical support to be provided as they reunite with their families

“Recognizing the psychological trauma and health challenges the children may have faced, we appeal for quality reformatory therapy sessions and medical support to be provided as they reunite with their families. We also call for immediate reparation packages to assist the children and their families in overcoming the significant hardship, pain, and emotional suffering experienced during this period of detention,” the statement concluded.
