On Saturday Portugal claimed top spot in Group F and a place in the last-16 with an emphatic 3-0 win against Turkey.

Roberto Martinez’s side looked unconvincing in a narrow 2-1 win against Czechia in their opening group match, but in Dortmund they reminded everyone exactly why they could go deep in the tournament.

Manchester City star Bernardo Silva opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he smashed home a cut-back inside the box, before Turkey shot themselves in the foot by scoring an extraordinary own goal.

Ahead of the tournament there was speculation about whether Ronaldo would start for Portugal or not, but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been named in the starting XI for both games so far.

The 39-year-old made few contributions against Czechia, but against Turkey he set up Bruno Fernandes to score Portugal’s third goal with an incredibly unselfish assist.

Ronaldo has scored 895 senior goals for club and country, but when presented with a one-on-one situation he opted to square the ball for his former Manchester United teammate Fernandes to tap into an empty net.

Rightly or wrongly, over the years Ronaldo has earned a reputation for being a bit of a selfish attacker, though fans think his assist on Sunday disproved that.

One fan posted on X: “Did I actually see that right? Cristiano not ramming that ball straight in,” while another commented: “Even the commentator was surprised when he passed.”

A third fan wrote about the Al-Nassr star: “Team first! That’s why he’s the best in the world,” before a fourth said: “Yet they say he’s selfish…”
