According to a report by Times Of Israel on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Hamas has welcomed Spain’s decision to withdraw its ambassador from Israel and to downgrade diplomatic relations, describing the action as a significant expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In a statement issued this week, the group said Madrid’s measure continues what it termed “honourable positions” by the Spanish government and citizens in opposing operations in the Gaza Strip that, Hamas asserted, amount to genocide. The statement added that Spain’s move rejects what the group characterises as violations of international law by the Israeli government.
Hamas described the diplomatic step as a “noble stance” that it believes demonstrates a genuine commitment to humanitarian values and dignity, and the group expressed appreciation for Spain’s approach. It urged other states to follow Madrid’s example by severing diplomatic and other ties with Israel.
The statement also called for intensified international pressure on Israel to halt what Hamas described as ongoing crimes and attacks against Palestinians and other peoples in the region, framing the demand as part of a broader appeal for accountability and protection of civilians.
Spain formally recalled its ambassador on March 11, publishing the decision after approval by the Council of Ministers. The Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will be led by a chargé d’affaires, reflecting a notable reduction in diplomatic representation between the two capitals.
The Spanish government has not indicated whether further diplomatic measures are under consideration, but the recall marks a clear shift amid growing international debate over the conduct of hostilities in Gaza.
