Renowned Ghanaian films (Gollywood) and Nigerian (Nollywood) actor, John Dumelo, has achieved a significant victory in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency election, successfully unseating incumbent Lydia Alhassan during the 2024 general elections.
Dumelo, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), garnered 40,561 votes, while Alhassan, from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 27,377 votes.
Naija News reports that parliamentary election, conducted on Saturday, December 7, 2024, represents a notable political milestone for Dumelo, who had previously contested the same seat in 2020 but faced a narrow defeat against Alhassan.
Having commenced his acting career in 1991 while still a student, Dumelo has risen to prominence, becoming a well-known figure in both the Ghanaian (Gollywood) and Nigerian (Nollywood) film industries.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect, John Mahama, on his electoral victory on Saturday.
Naija News reports that Peter Obi described Ghana’s Saturday election as a victory for democracy.
He commended Ghana’s political actors for their maturity and upholding democratic values during the election.
In a statement on Sunday, the former governor of Anambra State encouraged Mahama to embark on transformative achievements in the critical sector that would assist the country’s development.
“Your Excellency, Mr. President-elect John Mahama.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on your election victory as the President of the Republic of Ghana.
“Your victory stands as an example of the democratic values and political maturity our beloved continent so needs. It underscores Ghana’s proud tradition of respect for the democratic process and peaceful transitions
“May your presidency be marked by transformative achievements in the critical areas of development, education, health, pulling Ghanaian people out of poverty, and inspiring progress and unity across Africa,” Obi said.
