Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has questioned the political direction and impact of the Obidient movement, a support base aligned with Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate.
Sowunmi made the comments during an interview on The Volume Pod, where he spoke about Nigeria’s evolving political coalitions and the motivations behind emerging grassroots movements. His remarks come amid ongoing national debate over identity politics, electoral strategy, and opposition unity ahead of future elections.
In the interview, Sowunmi said, “The whole Obidient ‘Peter Obi come and be president’ is just to drag the nation closer together. The objective is to break the glass ceiling. To let the Igbo nation know that we collaborate and you will get power. What has Peter done with it?”

The PDP chieftain suggested that the movement initially emerged as a unifying political force aimed at broadening national inclusion and encouraging cooperation across ethnic and regional lines. However, he questioned whether that objective has been effectively translated into concrete political gains or strategic outcomes under Obi’s leadership.
Supporters of the Obidient movement, largely composed of young Nigerians and diaspora voters, have often described it as a grassroots-driven reform agenda focused on accountability, good governance, and national restructuring. Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election, continues to enjoy strong backing among his supporters despite not winning the race.
