In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, has criticized the emergence of Nafiu Bala in the ongoing leadership issues surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging that the situation reflects general efforts to weaken opposition politics in Nigeria.
”I thought they said this Mr. Nafiu was a lawyer? Do you see some @OfficialDSSNG-looking folks hanging around him?” he wrote.
In his post, Odinkalu questioned the credibility and independence of individuals involved in the dispute, suggesting that certain actors may be aligned with powerful interests, he raised concerns about the presence of security-linked influences around the unfolding events, implying that the situation may not be purely internal to the party.

According to him, developments within the ADC point to a pattern where opposition platforms are being destabilized ahead of the 2027 general elections, he argued that such actions could be part of a wider strategy linked to the administration of Bola Tinubu, aimed at limiting the strength of opposition coalitions.
Odinkalu stressed that political parties should be allowed to manage their internal affairs without undue interference and warned that any external manipulation could undermine democratic competition and reduce voter choice.
He further noted that the involvement of security agencies, whether direct or indirect, raises serious concerns about fairness and the rule of law and stated that institutions must remain neutral and avoid actions that could be interpreted as partisan.
The senior lawyer called on Nigerians and civil society groups to closely monitor the situation, he urged stakeholders to demand transparency and accountability from all parties involved.
