REVEALED: Yakubu Gowon Discloses Secret Arms Deals That Sustained Nigeria During Civil War

According to report by Vanguard on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed that Nigeria was compelled to seek military assistance from the Soviet Union and a Lebanese arms dealer after the United States and the United Kingdom declined to supply weapons during the Civil War.

Gowon explained that the embargo and restrictions imposed by Western countries left the Nigerian military struggling with severe ammunition shortages at a critical stage of the conflict between 1967 and 1970.
