Former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose has openly admitted that he would not be able to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a presidential contest while speaking on the state of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Fayose made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television, in the context of discussions surrounding the strength of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its chances in the next general election. His comments followed ongoing concerns about the party’s dwindling influence and internal challenges, which have seen a reduction in the number of governors under its platform.
He also spoke at the PDP national convention, where issues of party unity, strategy, and leadership were central to discussions. Fayose reiterated his earlier position that the party faces significant hurdles, particularly in mounting a competitive challenge against the ruling party in 2027.
According to him, “All the governors in the PDP jumped out of the water. Tell me how you want to win with two governors. It doesn’t make sense. For this election (2027), I told you in your station, PDP will not even come third. I told you.”
When asked if he can defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election if he were to be on the ballot, he said, “I can’t defeat him. No, I can’t beat Asiwaju. Put me on the ballot; I love to be on the ballot.”
