2027:Somebody Told Me Two Days Ago That INEC Will Deregister ADC; They Are Overcharging System–Amadi

Political analyst and Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Dr. Sam Amadi, has voiced serious concerns over mounting speculation about the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the perceived role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria’s political framework, particularly as the nation gears up for the 2027 general elections.

In a recent interview with Arise News, Dr. Amadi highlighted the rising tension surrounding legal and administrative disputes that are affecting opposition parties, warning that any perception of institutional overreach could deepen public mistrust and destabilize the democratic process.

“Somebody told me two days ago that INEC is going to deregister ADC; they are working to overcharge the system,” Amadi said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining calm and respecting due process.

He noted that the political climate in Nigeria is increasingly sensitive, with opposition parties navigating both internal challenges and external pressures.

According to Amadi, speculation about the potential deregistration of the ADC reflects broader concerns about the impartiality and limitations of Nigeria’s electoral institutions.

He stressed that while INEC has a critical role in regulating political parties and ensuring free and fair elections, it must operate strictly within the bounds of its legal mandate. Any action perceived to exceed its authority could undermine public confidence in the electoral system and intensify political tensions ahead of the 2027 polls.

“The role of electoral commissions is to facilitate democratic participation, not to intervene in partisan disputes or settle internal party matters,” Amadi explained. He underscored that the integrity of the electoral process relies on institutional restraint and transparency, particularly during periods of heightened political activity.

Observers have increasingly raised alarms about the impact of discussions surrounding the deregistration of parties on Nigeria’s multiparty system. Analysts warn that even unverified claims can create instability within party structures and generate fear among political stakeholders, potentially weakening democratic engagement.

Dr. Amadi further highlighted that the ADC, like other opposition parties, faces internal challenges in maintaining cohesion and credibility amid intense political maneuvering and media scrutiny.

However, he cautioned that external interference real or perceived could further strain the party’s ability to function effectively within Nigeria’s democratic process.

He called on all political actors, including INEC, to adhere strictly to legal frameworks and uphold democratic norms.

According to Amadi, giving credence to speculative claims of deregistration or permitting institutions to exceed their statutory mandate could compromise the legitimacy of upcoming elections and erode public trust in governance.

“The system is designed to protect democracy, but when institutions overstep or are perceived to overstep, it risks creating chaos rather than order,” he added, emphasizing the need for vigilance, transparency, and respect for institutional limits as Nigeria prepares for the next general elections.
