Nigerian Govt Releases Fresh Instructions On Use Of National Anthem, Lists Errors

According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, October 18, 2025, the Federal Government has released new instructions on how Nigerians should properly sing and recite the National Anthem during public and official events.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) made this known in a statement shared by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The agency said that many Nigerians make common mistakes when reciting the anthem and urged everyone to follow the correct format going forward.

According to the government, only the first stanza of the National Anthem should be sung or recited at official functions.

This rule applies to ceremonies in schools, government offices, and public gatherings.

The statement further explained that the third stanza of the anthem should be used as a National Prayer at the beginning of major national events.

It noted that all three stanzas are to be performed only during important national celebrations such as Independence Day, Democracy Day (June 12), Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Inauguration of a President, and the swearing-in of the National Assembly.

The NOA also reminded citizens that the National Pledge should be recited at the end of official functions, not before or during the anthem.

This, it said, would bring uniformity and respect to national ceremonies.

The agency stated that these corrections aim to preserve the dignity of national symbols and promote discipline among citizens.

It added that Nigerians must understand the meaning and purpose of each part of the anthem and the pledge.

Officials have also been directed to ensure that the new guidelines are followed at all government events.

Schools, public institutions, and private organizations are expected to adjust their programs accordingly.
