US Election: Trouble for overstayed Nigerians as Trump vows to carry out largest deportation in US history

Trump made this known at the Republican National Congress (RNC) when he formally accepted his nomination to represent the party in the 2024 general elections.

He said that the GOP platform proposes “the largest deportation operation in the history of our country”.

According to him, crime is dropping in countries in Central America such as

El Salvador because “they’re sending their murders to the United States of America”.

Trump, who escaped an assassination attempt a few days ago, noted that his deportations would be “even larger than that of President Dwight D Eisenhower from many years ago.

“You know, he was a moderate but he believed very strongly in borders. He had the largest deportation operation we’ve ever had.”
What does this mean for Nigeria?

According to the report, there is an estimated 29,723 Nigerian immigrants who have overstayed in the US. According to the US Department of Homeland Security in 2018, these individuals overstayed their U.S. non-immigrant tourism/business (B1/B2) visas between October 1, 2017, and September 30, 2018.

In its new report, titled: “The fiscal Year 2018 Entry/Exit Overstay Report” it said these immigrants, who entered the United States legally, refused to leave the country after their visas expired.

According to the report, 195,785 Nigerians that were given visas into the US were expected to leave” within the above window.”

Of this number, Nigeria had 15.18 per cent rate of overstay and a Suspected ‘In-Country Overstay’ rate of 14.81 per cent.

The report also showed that Nigeria has no departure record for 29,004 immigrants; while only 719 travelers left the country after their visas expired.>>>CONTINUE FULL READING HERE
