5 Things to know about new CBN Deputy Governor nominee, Yuguda

According to Daily Post, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.

Yuguda is widely regarded as an experienced financial professional with decades of experience in banking, capital markets regulation, and international finance. His nomination comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within the country’s apex bank.

In terms of education, Yuguda holds a Master of Science degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, which he obtained in 1991. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University in 1983.

His professional career began at the Central Bank of Nigeria where he held several key positions. Between 2010 and 2016, he served as Director of the Reserve Management Department at the CBN. During that period, he led teams responsible for managing and diversifying Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves while implementing investment strategies aimed at strengthening reserve assets.

Earlier in his career, he worked in the CBN’s Foreign Operations Department and Banking Supervision Department, where he handled tasks ranging from external debt service payments to prudential regulation and banking oversight.

Yuguda also gained international experience during his time at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., where he served as an economist in the Africa Department between 1997 and 2001. His responsibilities included assessing economic policies and managing balance-of-payments support programmes for African member countries.

More recently, Yuguda served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria from 2020 to 2024, where he supervised regulatory reforms and initiatives aimed at improving investor protection and strengthening Nigeria’s capital markets.

He also serves on the boards of institutions such as the Africa Finance Corporation and Premium Pension Limited as a non-executive director.

Yuguda holds several professional certifications, including being a Chartered Financial Analyst and a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. His expertise includes reserve asset management, foreign exchange portfolio management, and monetary policy analysis.
