Appointed by former President Buhari, Obono-Obla was abruptly removed a few months into his tenure. He described influential government members as “patrons of corruption” who were unsettled by his uncompromising approach.

The lack of financial backing was a significant  challenge for the panel. Obono-Obla noted that the panel was denied funding and lacked basic facilities until a federal agency intervened. Despite these obstacles, his team remained motivated by patriotism and achieved notable successes.

Obono-Obla speculated that investigations into the $7 billion CBN bailout, the failure of an oil company to pay $1.9 billion from an oil block purchase, and the illegal takeover of a building by a billionaire contributed to his troubles.

Despite the challenges and psychological trauma, Obono-Obla expressed pride in his service records. He highlighted the importance of working selflessly and patriotically for Nigeria.

Exasperated by the challenges, Obono-Obla considered resigning. He confided in his friend, Osita Okechukwu, who advised him to see President Buhari. After briefing the President on the frustrations, Buhari encouraged him to continue his work.
