The protesters who had earlier defied security warning to steer clear were tear gassed and chased away from the square which the FCT administration had declared out of bounds.
THE WHISTLER observed that a detachment of military personnel was brought into the square to strengthen the police and soldiers who were earlier overpowered by the protesters.
The protests which organisers said would last for 10 days are being held across the country against hunger and the generally bad economic situation in the country.
However, as of the time of filing this report, operatives of the Army, Police, NSCDC and police surveillance helicopter have surrounded the square armed to the teeth.
