A fresh wave of coordinated attacks by insurgent groups in northern Nigeria has intensified fears among residents and security analysts that the country may be entering another dangerous phase of insurgency.
According to a report by Punch Newspapers, at least 65 soldiers from the Nigerian Army have reportedly been killed within the past three weeks following multiple assaults on military bases and nearby communities in Borno State and Katsina State.
The attacks have been attributed to fighters linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), two extremist groups that have been active in the region for more than a decade. Security experts and local sources say the recent pattern of assaults suggests a calculated strategy by the insurgents to regain influence in parts of the North-East by targeting both military installations and civilian communities.
