Occupying the popular section of the road that connects the Port Harcourt refineries, the angry protesters disrupted vehicular movement in the area. They expressed their dissatisfaction over the incessant hunger, poverty, and high cost of food items in the country while stating that the government at all levels has failed to address the needs of the people. The protesters also stated that they were not satisfied with the Federal Government’s appeal for the people to call off the nationwide protest. One of the protesters, Wilson Idah, said they chose to occupy that particular section of the road due to its viable business potential. “We need the government to revive the refineries, which have so much employment and empowerment opportunities for us,” Idah said. “In spite of the huge economic potentials in the business area, we are unemployed, hungry, and poor. We are not taking any palliatives from politicians. We need jobs, good roads, affordable electricity, and basic infrastructure,” he added. The protests reflect a growing frustration among Nigerians over the state of the economy and the perceived inaction of the government to address critical issues affecting the populace. As the demonstrations continue, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the increasing pressure from its citizens.
