The northern part of the country has been worst hit by the ugly turn of events of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest. This has necessitated the imposition of curfew in various states, such as Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, and Plateau State.

While many opine that the region is worst hit by the protest because they were ”gaslighted” to protest against the federal government by Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election, others argue that the hate the North has for a Southern president propelled their grievances.

According to Yaya Oseni, ”The north is not happy that a Southerner is the president.”

He argued that the region protested en masse against former president Goodluck Jonathan, another Southern president.

”We saw what happened during Jonathan’s era. This protest is more in the North than in the South for obvious reasons,” he said.

”It is quite unfortunate that after 64 years of independence, we don’t see ourselves as one Nigeria,” Oseni added.

Sharing the same sentiments, Lawal Sharifdeen argued that the region ”can’t endure to stay out of power. They have born to rule mentally. Let them destroy all their resources because a southerner is the president.”

However, for Sadeeq Kabir, he mentioned that it is an aberration to say the region is ”not happy with a Southern president.”

He mentioned that during the 2023 presidential polls, Arewa voted en masse for Tinubu.

”The north voted for Tinubu regardless of his region and anything, we believed in him and his abilities, so it’s quite unfortunate to say the north is not happy with a southerner as their leader, whereas the north gave that southerner the highest vote,” Sadiq stated.

While many states have remained under curfew in a bid to mitigate the wanton destruction of lives and properties, the hunger protest has continued in states like Lagos and Rivers State.
