JUST IN: Peace or Politics? Katsina LG Chairman Meets Armed Fulani Fighters Amid U.S. Tensions
As reported by Linda Ikeji’s Blog. Amid rising diplomatic tension following Donald Trump’s military action threat and the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” Funtua Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abdu Goya, has stirred debate after meeting with armed bandit groups in Katsina State under the banner of a “peace mission.”
The Chairman of Funtua Local Government Area, Hon. Abdu Goya, has held a controversial meeting with armed groups reportedly involved in banditry across parts of Katsina State.
According to SaharaReporters, the meeting was part of what local authorities described as an ongoing peace initiative aimed at reconciling the Hausa and Fulani communities, who have experienced years of violent clashes.
Sources revealed that Goya’s visit to the affected regions in Funtua was intended to deepen dialogue and strengthen trust between both sides. The meeting reportedly brought together representatives of the armed Fulani groups and community leaders from several Hausa settlements.
During the talks, the local government chairman emphasized the need for mutual understanding and urged both parties to prioritize peace and cooperation. Goya also appealed for the release of individuals abducted during previous conflicts, describing it as a crucial step toward genuine reconciliation.
“Our goal is to build lasting peace. The people of Funtua deserve security, not fear. This dialogue is about healing and rebuilding trust,” Goya reportedly said.
The development comes at a sensitive time, as former U.S. President Donald Trump recently issued a military action threat against Nigeria and labeled the country a “nation of concern” over alleged religious persecution and human rights issues.
Observers have since expressed mixed reactions to Goya’s outreach, with some hailing it as a brave move toward peace, while others criticized it as negotiating with criminals amid international scrutiny.
Despite the controversy, the Katsina State government has reiterated its support for local peacebuilding efforts, stressing that dialogue remains one of the most effective ways to restore normalcy in the violence-affected region.
