According to a report by the Punch on Monday, March 16, 2026, Michael Idoko, a Peoples Democratic Party aspirant for Olamaboro Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, has expressed doubts about the African Democratic Congress emerging as a serious opposition force in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. He argued that the party lacks the nationwide political structure, experienced leadership, and grassroots networks needed to compete effectively against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Idoko stressed the importance of established opposition parties in Nigeria’s electoral landscape. “Today, the Peoples Democratic Party remains the only formidable opposition party in Nigeria,” he said, highlighting that smaller parties like the ADC do not yet possess the organisational strength required to challenge APC at the state or national level.
Idoko pointed out that the PDP maintains extensive structures across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including governors, senators, and members of state and federal assemblies, making it uniquely positioned to mobilise voters effectively. He warned that fragmented opposition could inadvertently strengthen the ruling party’s hold on power.
He also urged PDP members and supporters to focus on unity and collaboration, emphasizing that cohesive action is essential to present a credible alternative to the electorate. By consolidating leadership and grassroots efforts, Idoko believes the PDP can remain Nigeria’s leading opposition and offer meaningful democratic choice ahead of 2027.
Idoko further criticised the notion that emerging parties could easily replace the PDP, arguing that the realities of Nigerian politics demand experience and well-established networks. He noted that political influence is not built overnight and that a party’s ability to organise at the ward and local government levels is critical for electoral success.
