For the third day, protesters have continued to disrupt the activities at Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The protest started on Monday morning by the members of the Amadi-Ama community over the death of a fisherman, Precious Imabibo. Protesters carried placards with different inscriptions like: “We want justice,” We want compensation”, “NNLG show empathy”, “Precious Imabibo was a breadwinner”, etc.
The protesters, including; fishermen, some stakeholders and the victim’s family lamented the lack of empathy on the part of the NNLG management towards the bereaved family despite numerous correspondences with the company.
They demanded justice and compensation for the deceased’s family.
The victim’s father, Mr. Ipalibo Imabibo, lamented that since the tragic incident happened eight months ago, the company has refused to accede to their demand for compensation.
In his reaction, however, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, acknowledged the protest and stated that the company is engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue amicably.
Odeh emphasized that NLNG values the safety and well-being of its people and host communities and called for calm while awaiting the outcome of the investigation by the Nigeria Police.
