The 64-year-old speaker of parliament, who has been a notable figure in Iran’s political and military scene and previously led the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has stepped forward following the fatalities of Ali Larijani and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
While Mojtaba Khamenei, who is said to have taken control after his father’s death, has largely remained out of the public eye, issuing just a few statements, Qalibaf has chosen a contrasting path. He has been active in media engagements and has shared several messages online, presenting himself as a proactive leader during this time of conflict.
“We are facing an unbalanced war with an uneven setup, we need to take action and utilize resources that reflect our culture, creativity, and design,” Qalibaf stated in comments aired on Iranian television.
