JUST IN: IAEA Chief Says Iran’s Nuclear Capabilities Still Intact, Military Action Alone Cannot Destroy Them

According to a CBS News report of Friday 20 of March 2026, the head of the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog agency has said on Thursday that “a lot has survived” of Iran’s nuclear capabilities and that military operations alone cannot destroy them, signalling ongoing uncertainty about the impact of recent strikes on Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure.

In a televised interview on CBS News’s Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director‑General, Rafael Grossi, addressed claims about the effect of military actions by the United States (U.S.) and its allies on Iran’s nuclear programme. Grossi’s comments offered a stark contrast to assertions by some political and military leaders that Tehran’s nuclear capacity had been comprehensively dismantled.

Grossi said that despite extensive damage at several facilities, core elements of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure remain intact. He explained that military strikes could not alone eliminate the country’s capabilities, suggesting that damage to enrichment sites and related infrastructure did not equate to total destruction.
