The U20 Lionesses were defeated 1-0 by Colombia at Estadio El Campín in Bogota, during the second day of their World Cup group A matches. Naomie Eto and her teammates needed a win to get closer to the second round of the competition, especially after the draw against Mexico. Unfortunately, they could not rise to the challenge against the host country.
Hassan Balla’s charges did not show their best form early this morning (2 AM, Cameroon time). Technically, Lamine Mana and her teammates made numerous errors. They struggled to build their play. Fear was evident despite the good technical quality of Monique Ngock and Naomie Eto in midfield. On the other hand, Colombia was playing for a spot in the next round. With a solid victory on the first day, they ensured a fluid game. By constantly clearing the ball, the Lionesses put themselves in difficulty.
In the 68th minute, Cathy Biya could not keep her goal intact. Munoz, who had entered a few minutes earlier, gave her team the lead (1-0). Toko and her teammates tried to fight back in vain. Colombia had a good defensive plan and ball exits that bypassed the lines. In added time, Cathy Biya made a save to prevent the second goal. Third in group A with one point, Hassan Balla will have to find the formula to overcome Australia. A victory is imperative to hope to advance to the next round.
The presence of Samuel Eto’o at this match holds particular significance in the current context. While Cameroonian football is going through a turbulent period, the presence of the FECAFOOT president can be interpreted as a sign of support and solidarity towards the country’s young talents. Despite the challenges and criticisms, Eto’o continues to show his commitment to the development of Cameroonian football at all levels.
