Happening now: Many stage protest as tension mounts at INEC headquarters

There was heavy security presence on Thursday at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja following the commission’s decision to de-list the National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from its official portal.

The development reportedly triggered tension around the commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, as more than 2,000 protesters gathered near the facility shortly after the decision was announced.

Many of the protesters were said to be members of the ADC, supporters of the Obidient Movement and other groups who had planned a demonstration tagged ‘Occupy INEC’.

Roads leading to the commission’s headquarters were blocked with security vehicles, while a large deployment of security personnel was observed in the area.

Security agencies present included officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The tension followed INEC’s decision to remove the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively.

INEC also stated that it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through the courts.

According to the electoral body, recognition of all factions within the party has been suspended pending the outcome of a substantive suit before the Federal High Court.

The commission further noted that it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organised by groups aligned with the affected leaders until the legal dispute is resolved.

The situation remains under close watch as security operatives maintain a strong presence around the INEC headquarters to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
