I Won That Rivers Election Squarely Against A Candidate My APC Predecessor Himself Put Forward– Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national leader, Nyesom Wike, has urged Nigerians and political analysts not to underestimate his party’s electoral prospects simply because it currently lacks sitting governors.

Wike cited his own experience in the 2015 Rivers State governorship election as proof that the absence of an incumbent does not automatically result in electoral defeat. He faced a candidate backed by his predecessor, who had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), and won decisively, demonstrating that strategy, preparation, and voter engagement matter more than mere political endorsements.

“In 2015 when I became governor, my predecessor was APC and he put up his own candidate. I won that election squarely,” Wike told journalists, underscoring that determination and careful planning can overcome conventional political disadvantages.

He emphasized that the key question for any serious candidate or party is not whether they have the backing of an incumbent governor, but whether they are genuinely prepared, psychologically committed, and willing to do what it takes to win. “The question every serious candidate and party must ask is not whether they have a governor’s backing but whether they are genuinely prepared, psychologically committed and ready to do what it takes to win,” he said.

Wike also warned against candidates who enter elections merely to appear on a ballot or use the contest as a bargaining chip. According to him, both voters and party leaders can easily distinguish between candidates who are truly ready to fight for victory and those who are participating for symbolic or strategic purposes.

“Far too many people enter elections just to appear on a ballot or to use the contest as leverage,” Wike said. “Voters and party leaders alike can always tell the difference between a serious candidate and one who is not truly prepared to fight.”

Political analysts have noted that Wike’s statements challenge a common assumption in Nigerian politics that incumbency is the most critical determinant of electoral success. His experience in Rivers State shows that a candidate’s personal credibility, grassroots support, and strategic planning can outweigh the advantages of incumbent endorsement or party machinery.

Wike’s reflections come as Nigeria’s political parties gear up for upcoming elections, with many observers debating the influence of incumbency on electoral outcomes. His remarks aim to reassure PDP members and supporters that victory is achievable with the right preparation and commitment, regardless of whether the party currently holds gubernatorial seats in key states.

By drawing on his own political journey, Wike reinforces the importance of determination, strategy, and preparation in electoral contests. “Winning an election is about more than political endorsements or machinery. It’s about being ready, being committed, and being prepared to engage with the people you hope to serve,” he added.
