Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have renewed calls for the removal of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) amid escalating tensions over the party’s internal leadership dispute and preparations for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
The opposition party accused the electoral body of actions that could undermine democratic competition and potentially tilt the political landscape in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The demand was contained in a statement read in Abuja on behalf of party leaders by former Senate President David Mark.
The controversy follows INEC’s decision to remove several ADC officials, including Mark and other party leaders, from its official website—an action that sparked accusations of bias and interference in the party’s internal affairs.
However, political analyst O’diakpo Obire has pushed back against claims that the electoral commission is responsible for the crisis. Speaking during a televised discussion on the issue, Obire argued that the turmoil stems primarily from factional disagreements within the ADC rather than external interference.
According to him, the dispute over leadership—currently before the Federal High Court—has placed INEC in a difficult position where it cannot recognise one faction over another until a final judicial ruling is delivered.

“Instead of blaming INEC or blaming the ruling party of influencing INEC, which I disagree totally, it is an internal crisis that they should resolve within themselves so that they can participate with one voice in the next election cycle,” Obire said.
Obire emphasised that political parties must maintain clear and unified leadership structures if they expect the electoral body to recognise their activities, including conventions and candidate nominations.
He also warned that if the ADC proceeds with party conventions while the leadership dispute remains unresolved, such actions could be deemed invalid by INEC.
