Human rights lawyer Kola Lakpini reacted to a troubling pattern in the President’s response to national tragedies, particularly following recent violent attacks in Jos, Nigeria, arguing that the President’s visits often stop at airport appearances rather than direct engagement with affected communities.
Lakpini noted that during the Plateau visit, the President did not enter Jos city but remained at the airport, several kilometers away from victims, which he said limits firsthand understanding of the crisis and prevents meaningful interaction with those affected.

He further cited a similar incident in Yelwata, where, despite a deadly attack, the President reportedly did not visit the massacre site, blaming poor road conditions. A statement Lakpini argued reflects governance failure, since the government is responsible for infrastructure.
According to Lakpini, the President also claimed he had only ten minutes during the Plateau visit due to concerns about inadequate lighting at the airport, a justification the lawyer described as insufficient given the gravity of the situation.
He added that such limited engagements risk widening the gap between leadership and citizens, stressing that true leadership requires physical presence, empathy, and direct support for affected communities during times of crisis.
In a recent interview with Arise TV News, he said, “The president did not visit Jos, he visited the airport and this is becoming a worrisome pattern. The other day, we had over 300 people massacred in Yelwata, he went to Benue and didn’t get to Yelwata. He said the roads were bad, the government is responsible for the roads. He goes to the airport and says, ‘Oh, I hear that there’s not going to be light; the airport does not have lights, so I only have 10 minutes.’ How do you do such a thing to your citizens?”
