2027: Delay in Guber Candidate Selection Could Fuel Rivalry, Arm-Twisting – Kwara APC Elders

Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday at the NUJ Press Centre in Ilorin, the caucus, represented by Chief James Bamisaiye Ayeni, urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to immediately commence the process of identifying party candidates in order to safeguard unity within the party.

The elders expressed concern that the growing number of aspirants jostling for the APC ticket could heighten tension if the process is not clearly defined and timely executed.

They stressed that early action by the party leadership would help prevent internal wrangling and ensure a smooth primary process in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The caucus also advocated for the adoption of a consensus arrangement, noting that such an approach remains the most viable option for preserving cohesion within the party.

Reiterating their long-standing position on power rotation, the elders maintained that equity and fairness demand that the governorship seat be ceded to Kwara North in 2027.

They argued that by the next election cycle, Kwara Central would have occupied the governorship for 20 years, while Kwara South would have held the position for eight years, leaving Kwara North yet to produce a governor in the current democratic dispensation.

“It is in the interest of justice, equity and fairness that the next governor should come from Kwara North,” the caucus stated.

The elders further highlighted the consistent electoral support the district has given to the APC, noting that Kwara North delivered strong votes for the party in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 elections, regardless of where the party’s candidates emerged from.

They called on party leaders to ensure inclusive consultations with critical stakeholders to guarantee the emergence of a widely accepted candidate.

On security, the caucus commended the efforts of both the federal and state governments in addressing insecurity and sympathised with victims of recent bandit attacks.
