A prison official, speaking anonymously, revealed the scope of the escape, noting, “The flood damaged our facility, and some of the inmates who escaped include Boko Haram commanders. The total number of escapees is over 200.”
The flooding crisis contradicts earlier claims by Borno State authorities, who had reassured the public of adequate flood prevention efforts just days before the disaster struck. The downpour left parts of Maiduguri severely impacted, displacing many residents and causing widespread destruction.
Meanwhile, Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, confirmed they are assessing the situation. He added, “We are conducting a countrywide evaluation and will provide further updates in two hours.”
