Today, a cross-section of Nigeria’s top officials, along with diplomats and dignitaries, will gather to pay their last respects to Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25, 2024, at 82. Among the esteemed attendees are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Afenifere chieftain Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and a delegation of Lagos White Cap Chiefs representing the Oba of Lagos. Also present are Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate Peter Obi, federal and state legislators, Southeast governors, and eminent business leaders. This gathering reflects the admiration and respect Iwuanyanwu commanded across Nigeria and beyond, as a bridge-builder and unifier in a diverse country.
Imo State’s Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, who visited the Iwuanyanwu family earlier in the week, confirmed the state government’s commitment to a befitting burial, ensuring that every detail honors Iwuanyanwu’s vast legacy. His traditional titles from various regions in Nigeria, including the Balogun Babagunwa of Ibadan Land and Maiyegun of Idoko in Osun State, underscore the pan-Nigerian admiration he garnered.
Known widely as an entrepreneur, Chief Iwuanyanwu was celebrated for his success in industries ranging from engineering to media, where his Champion Newspaper gave voice to marginalized communities. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a service of songs at Eko Hotels in Lagos, extolled Iwuanyanwu’s dedication to youth development and his vision of a unified Nigeria. Sanwo-Olu remarked, “Chief Iwuanyanwu was a patriot and a champion of unity. His impact on the economic and political fronts is indelible, as is his philanthropic work that transformed countless lives across the nation.”
Emotions ran high as former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, reflected on Iwuanyanwu’s Igbo title, “Ahaejiagamba,” symbolizing his revered status within his community and beyond. The final journey for Iwuanyanwu began on October 26 with a service of songs in Enugu, where Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah described him as a “national unity champion.” A subsequent tribute service at the CATOL in Owerri on October 29 and his arrival at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport on October 30 set the stage for a series of commemorations.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma welcomed Iwuanyanwu’s remains in a solemn ceremony, after which a convoy accompanied the body to the Glass House, the former headquarters of Iwuanyanwu Holdings. The day also saw a special football match at Dan Anyiam Stadium, honoring Iwuanyanwu’s love for sports through his historic Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club.
The funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral, Atta, a church built by Iwuanyanwu himself. Religious leaders from various denominations are set to lead the commendation. As Nigeria bids farewell to this monumental figure, Chief Iwuanyanwu’s legacy as a visionary businessman, politician, and humanitarian is destined to inspire generations to come.
