In a recent interview shared by Channels TV, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, raised concerns over the growing pressure on Nigeria’s judicial system as political activities intensify ahead of upcoming elections.
Speaking on the increasing wave of litigation linked to political disputes, Osigwe warned that the courts may soon become overwhelmed. He stated, “In the next few weeks, our courts will be clogged with political cases, and many judges will not be hearing them.”
He explained that the surge in cases, particularly those arising from party primaries and internal disagreements, could significantly slow down the justice delivery process. According to him, when courts are burdened with excessive political matters, it becomes difficult for judges to give timely attention to other important cases, including commercial and civil disputes.
Osigwe further emphasized the need for strict adherence to legal provisions that limit unnecessary court interference in internal party affairs. He noted that reducing avoidable political cases would help ease the workload on judges and improve efficiency within the judiciary.
The NBA president also expressed concern that prolonged litigation could undermine public confidence in the legal system. He stressed that ensuring quicker resolutions and respecting legal boundaries are essential steps toward maintaining the integrity and credibility of the judiciary.
