The Football Association (FA) has officially launched an investigation following the disruptive behavior exhibited by Tottenham Hotspur fans during their match against Chelsea in the Premier League.
The highly anticipated London derby which took place at Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Sunday, December 8, ended in a thrilling 4-3 defeat for Spurs.
Throughout the match, several Tottenham supporters were seen throwing objects onto the pitch, causing significant concern among officials and spectators alike.
This incident marred what was otherwise an exciting game, especially as Spurs took an early lead, going up 2-0 within the first 11 minutes of play. The goals came from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski, creating an electric atmosphere in the stadium.
However, the tides turned in favour of Chelsea as they mounted a comeback. Jadon Sancho found the net, followed by two penalties converted by Cole Palmer.
Enzo Fernandez also contributed to the scoreline with a goal, leaving Tottenham to fight for a late consolation which was delivered by their star player, Son Heung-min.
To show support and display their club’s pride, Spurs fans in the South Stand were distributed pieces of paper before the match. These papers were intended to form a giant tifo displaying the club’s motto, “audere est facere,” which translates from Latin to “to dare is to do.” Unfortunately, this creative initiative took a turn as several fans threw these pieces of paper onto the field while Chelsea’s players were preparing to take corners at that same end.
In light of these events, the FA is currently investigating the incidents that occurred during the match. They plan to review match footage as well as the report submitted by referee Anthony Taylor.
Based on their findings, the FA may consider taking further action against those responsible for the disturbances.
