According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, April 26, 2026, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned a series of coordinated attacks in Mali, calling for an urgent and unified international response as insecurity escalates across the Sahel region.
In a statement delivered on Saturday through his spokesperson, Guterres said, “The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of attacks in several locations across Mali,” highlighting the need for immediate global attention to the worsening security situation.
He further called for “coordinated international support” to address the growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism, while also responding to the expanding humanitarian crisis affecting civilians in impacted areas.
Regional authorities described the incidents as among the most complex in recent years. The attacks reportedly targeted areas surrounding Bamako and other strategic locations, heightening concerns over the country’s deteriorating security environment.
An Al-Qaeda-affiliated group claimed responsibility for the assaults, stating that the operations involved coordinated actions across multiple sites beginning at dawn.
Separately, the Azawad Liberation Front said it had taken control of the northern city of Kidal following an offensive. The group claimed only a limited presence of Malian forces and foreign personnel remained at a former UN base, although this has not been independently verified.
Mali’s government confirmed that several cities were affected, reporting at least 16 injuries. Authorities stated that security forces have since regained control of key areas and described the incidents as terrorist attacks.
The FLA also indicated coordination with Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin as part of efforts to expand influence in northern Mali. No independent confirmation of territorial claims has been established, as the country continues to face a prolonged security crisis.
