FG Unveils New ‘Proof of Address System’ To Tackle Insecurity In 774 LGAs

The Federal Government, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has announced plans to introduce the ‘Proof of Address System Initiative’ to combat insecurity across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting on the activation and implementation of the system in Abuja.

Represented by Dr. Nnamdi Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Akume stated that the initiative aims to address long-standing challenges such as insecurity, social vices, and poor governance.

The Proof of Address Initiative, which will be implemented across all 774 Local Governments, is designed to provide every resident with a verifiable and secured address.

“This crucial tool, which will become part of the administrative process across the public and private sectors, will bolster national security, enhance government planning, and contribute to a more orderly society,” Akume said.

According to Akume, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to tackling Nigeria’s critical challenges and laying a foundation for a more secure, efficient, and prosperous nation.

At this crucial time in our nation’s history, the proof of address system is indispensable in addressing these challenges.

“It serves as a foundation upon which various initiatives can be built to strengthen national security, streamline government operations, and foster economic growth.

“As we plan to embark on this project, we must recognise that it is not just a technical exercise but a transformative initiative with far-reaching implications for every sector,” he stressed.

To ensure smooth implementation, Akume urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to make the proof of address certificate from local governments a standard requirement for verifying addresses.

He pointed out that the inability to accurately identify addresses had hindered efforts to combat criminal activities, secure communities, and support effective development planning.

In light of these challenges, the introduction of the proof of address system is not just timely but necessary for the strengthening of our national identity management infrastructure,” Akume remarked.

Local Governments Back Initiative

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bello Lawal, National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), expressed strong support for the initiative.

Represented by Mr. Akala Samuel, Lawal described it as a fundamental shift in how local governments engage with citizens and communities.

The current vision of the project is to help local governments find their place in the global social and economic development in the region.

“The goal is to create a solid base for social development and grow social collaboration.

“By establishing a formal system of identification through the initiative, we are improving accountability and enhancing our ability to secure our neighbourhood,” Lawal stated.

He further emphasized that the project, in line with the federal government’s initiative to create a comprehensive and trustworthy national social register, plays a crucial role in tackling major social issues like poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
