Umar Sani, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said the party remains a strong opposition in Nigeria despite recent setbacks caused by defections and internal disagreements.

In an interview with THISDAY, on Sunday May 3 2026, Sani noted that the PDP has remained the leading opposition party since 2015. He explained that although the party lost many states in 2015, it regained some ground in 2019, controlling about 17 to 18 states.
