President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the essence of the proposed tax reform bills is to eliminate traces of colonial rule in Nigeria.

He asserted that the tax bills are here to stay, insisting that Nigeria cannot continue applying methods from the past to handle the present.

Tinubu stated this during a media chat in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State on Monday.

His statement comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the bills across Nigeria.

The president said: “Tax reform is here to stay. We cannot continue doing what we were doing yesterday in today’s economy. The essence of the tax reform bills is to eliminate the influence of colonial rule on Nigeria’s economy.”

Meanwhile,  Tinubu has advised Nigerians to switch off their light to reduce electricity bills.

Naija News recalls that after Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, energy costs skyrocketed, especially with the removal of the petrol subsidy and electricity tariff hike. Petrol prices more than quadrupled, soaring from less than N200 per litre to over N1,100 in many parts of the country.

On April 3, 2024, the electricity regulator raised the tariff for customers said to be under the Band A classification, with customers now paying N225 kilowatt per hour from N66, a development that has been heavily criticised by many Nigerians, considering the immediacy of the tariff hike and the current hardship in the country.

Speaking on Monday in a chat with reporters at his Bourdillon residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, Tinubu advised Nigerians to improve their management skills.

He said, “It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage.”
