Civil war: That How Singular act made me take more interest in Obasanjo and what he did – Gowon

According to a report by the Punch on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has recounted a tense episode during the civil war in which a young Olusegun Obasanjo reportedly resisted being placed under the command structure of Colonel Murtala Muhammed.

Gowon made the disclosure in Chapter 14 of his autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, where he detailed military decisions, personal interactions, and internal disagreements among senior officers during the war. The account was made public during the book’s launch in Abuja.
