According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, April 3, 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has weighed in on the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that the party should be satisfied with the position taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Wike made the remarks during a media briefing in Abuja today, where he addressed the electoral body’s decision to suspend recognition of all factions within the ADC pending the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings. According to him, INEC’s action was fair under the circumstances and should not be viewed negatively by party stakeholders.
“ADC should be happy that INEC said, ‘Look, we are not going to recognize any of you until you sort your matter in court,’” Wike said.
The minister, however, expressed his personal view that INEC could have gone further by recognizing Nafiu Bala Gombe as the party’s National Chairman, based on his interpretation of the situation. “In my own opinion, INEC, by that judgment, ought to have recognized Bala Gombe as the ADC national chairman,” he added.

INEC had earlier removed the names of former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, respectively. The commission also declined to recognize Bala Gombe, who is seeking to assume the position through the courts.
The electoral body stated that it would not monitor any conventions or congresses organized by rival factions until the Federal High Court delivers a final judgment on the matter. The decision effectively leaves the party without officially recognized leadership for the time being.
Reacting to the development, the ADC accused INEC of acting unlawfully and taking sides in the dispute, a claim that continues to generate debate within political circles.
Wike, however, maintained that the commission’s stance was appropriate, urging the party to resolve its internal crisis through legal means before seeking formal recognition.
