The Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, has raised concerns over the environment in which a recent bullying incident occurred at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City.
Afegbua spoke during an interview on Channels Television, where he reacted to a viral video showing a student being assaulted by fellow students within the school premises.
While discussing the footage, the commissioner said the graffiti visible in the room where the incident took place raised serious questions about supervision within the school.
According to him, “Well, it’s like you’re just reading my mind because while we were sitting at the studio here watching that particular video, when I saw that graffiti, I was wondering, how could this kind of a room exist within a school, and teachers have not taken steps to ask or probe further what could be the rationale for all of that kind of graffiti?”
Afegbua stressed that beyond the actions of the students involved, the situation highlights the need for greater vigilance from both educators and parents. “But again, that’s what I said earlier—that it’s important for the teachers to play their role well, as well as also the parents,” he added.
