According to a report by Arise TV on Saturday, March 7, 2026, violence erupted in Auchi after angry youths set fire to several houses and shops in the Hausa quarters of the town following growing frustration over persistent kidnapping incidents in the area.
The unrest reportedly began after residents staged protests over the increasing cases of abductions, which they say have created fear and insecurity across the community. The situation later escalated when some youths stormed parts of the Hausa settlement, setting buildings and business premises ablaze.
Witnesses said the attackers targeted houses and shops belonging to members of the Hausa community, accusing them of harbouring criminal elements allegedly linked to the kidnapping activities.
The development triggered panic among residents, with many people fleeing their homes as the violence spread through parts of the area. Thick smoke was seen rising from several buildings that were set on fire during the chaos.
Community sources said the unrest followed a series of kidnapping incidents in recent weeks that have heightened tension among residents of the town.
Local traders and shop owners were forced to close their businesses while security concerns mounted across the area.
Security operatives were later deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation of the violence. Authorities are said to be monitoring the situation closely as efforts continue to bring the unrest under control.
Auchi, a major commercial town in northern Edo State, has in recent years experienced growing security concerns, particularly related to kidnapping and armed criminal activities along major roads and surrounding communities.
Residents have repeatedly called on the government and security agencies to strengthen security presence in the area to curb the rising incidents.
As of the time of filing this report, officials were yet to release an official statement on the extent of the damage or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the violence.
