In a recent YouTube appearance, Senator Van Galand, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, analyzed U.S. foreign policy regarding Iran over the past decade, highlighting the contrast between the Obama and Trump administrations.
He recounted how President Donald Trump frequently criticized Barack Obama, claiming that Obama’s negotiating skills were inadequate and predicting that he would start a war with Iran as a result.
Galand pointed out, however, that Obama never pursued military conflict with Iran; instead, he negotiated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which successfully prevented Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
He noted that while the agreement had limitations and required extensions to remain effective, it represented a clear diplomatic achievement.
Galand contrasted this with the approach of the Trump administration, which quickly abandoned the JCPOA during its first term.
He criticized Trump’s subsequent diplomatic efforts, describing them as flawed and ineffective, with negotiators sent to Iran failing to meet the high standards that Trump had imposed on Obama.
This, he argued, has contributed to the current escalation, dragging the U.S. into a more dangerous and unstable situation.
He emphasized that reckless or poorly executed policies can create long-term security risks and undermine both American influence abroad and the safety of its allies.
Galand’s analysis underlined the importance of measured diplomacy and strategic foresight in preventing unnecessary conflicts, stressing that actions taken in haste or for political posturing can have serious consequences.
He said, “Donald Trump went after Barack Obama. He said Barack Obama is going to start a war against Iran because he’s a lousy negotiator. You can reroll the tape. Well, here we have it. Barack Obama did not negotiate… And he said in that time that he wanted to distract from domestic problems. Exactly. And so here we are, flash forward to today. Barack Obama did not go to war with Iran. In fact, Barack Obama negotiated the JCPOA, which did prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon… Donald Trump tears it up in his first term and now he sends off his great negotiators to Iran who clearly failed the test that Donald Trump had laid out for Barack Obama. And now we’re dragged into this war in Iran.”
