According to a report by Punch on Thursday, March 12, 2025, the 22nd Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, formally retired after 36 years of service in the Nigeria Police Force, marking the end of a distinguished career in law enforcement.
His departure was commemorated during a pull-out parade in Abuja, attended by senior government officials, retired IGPs, members of the National Assembly, service chiefs, traditional rulers, and police officers.
Egbetokun emphasized that policing leadership extends beyond any individual, highlighting the institution’s ongoing role in national security and public service.
During his tenure, significant reforms were introduced to strengthen professionalism, enhance operational effectiveness, and expand intelligence-led policing.
The Police Intelligence Bureau was upgraded into a full department, while legal and medical units achieved directorate status to improve efficiency.
A modernized cybercrime centre was established to monitor and respond to threats across Nigeria’s digital space, supported by a strengthened national criminal database and extensive professional training for officers nationwide.
Egbetokun also prioritized community policing by expanding the operational presence of the Nigeria Police Force through new area commands, divisions, and additional Police Mobile Force squadrons.
