BREAKING: I did not step down for anybody; I fired to the end—women need governor support to succeed— Base

In a recent interview with Edmund Obilo on September 8th, 2025, politician Basa spoke about her political journey, clarifying rumours surrounding her candidacy and her relationship with the state governor. She made it clear that her determination never wavered. “I did not step down for anybody; I fought to the end—women need governor support to succeed,” she said, emphasising her independence and women’s challenges in politics.

Basa explained that despite losing an election, she remained committed to her goals. She recounted how political giants stepped down for other candidates, creating a rumor that she had also stepped aside. She clarified that she had not, saying, “I did not step down for anybody. I was weak,” but added that her focus was always on her own mission and vision.

After the election, Basa met with the governor to discuss her future in politics. She recounted, “Excellency, I will support you with good intentions for the people which you tell us you have. However, I want you to also support me. Let me also either go for Senate or Rep. That will be in 2023.” The governor assured her of his support, recognising the need for more women in political offices.

Basa also spoke about her work as a senior special assistant on diaspora matters, which she began in 2020. She praised the governor for his prudence and transparency, noting that he paid wages on time and cleared backdated pensions for retirees.

She stressed the importance of support from sitting governors for women aspiring to political offices, highlighting the structural challenges in Nigerian politics. Basa’s determination, backed by her family’s political legacy, demonstrates her commitment to serving her community despite obstacles.
