Speaking in an interview aired by TVC News, Akinola questioned the basis of allegations against the electoral body, insisting that there is no clear evidence of unfairness in its actions. He argued that while INEC has faced various accusations in recent times, critics have not sufficiently demonstrated how the commission has violated electoral laws or procedures.
“INEC has been faced with all sorts of allegations, but where is the unfairness in what it has done?” he asked, calling for a more objective assessment of the commission’s role.
Akinola also highlighted his confidence in INEC’s leadership, noting that the chairman is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) with a deep understanding of the legal framework guiding elections. According to him, this level of legal expertise ensures that decisions taken by the commission are grounded in due process and constitutional provisions.
He stressed that political parties and stakeholders must operate strictly within the law, particularly in matters involving disputes and leadership issues. Akinola revealed that he has received communications from various political actors, further emphasizing the need for all parties to respect legal channels.
Underscoring the importance of the judiciary, he described it as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy. He maintained that court rulings are binding and must be obeyed by all institutions and political actors, warning that disregard for judicial decisions could undermine the credibility of the electoral system.
His remarks come at a time of heightened political tension, as debates over electoral transparency and institutional neutrality continue to shape national discourse.
