BREAKING NEWS: Armed Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint in Niger

Barely two days after a deadly attack on Kasuwar Daji market in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, where over 40 people were killed and several others abducted, gunmen have launched another assault in the area.

Reports obtained by Naija News on Monday (today) revealed that the latest attack targeted a Mobile Police (MOPOL) checkpoint at New Kalli, Wawa Ward, in the same local government area, further heightening fears among residents already traumatised by the earlier massacre.

According to SaharaReporters, the gunmen struck in the early hours of Sunday, at about 12:30 a.m., when they stormed the MOPOL checkpoint.

During the raid, the attackers reportedly set fire to the officers’ living quarters, destroyed farm produce and made away with some personal belongings.

“They burnt their room, and packed some of their belongings,” a source told the media platform.

However, no casualties were recorded during the attack, as the officers were said to have escaped unharmed.

Naija News reports that the renewed assault came barely 48 hours after the deadly attack on Kasuwar Daji market, also in Borgu Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed the lives of about 40 people.

Scores of others, including children and elderly women, were abducted during the market invasion, according to earlier reports.

Many of the victims were said to be residents of rural communities within Borgu, who had converged at the market when the assailants struck.

The back-to-back attacks have thrown Borgu communities into panic, with residents expressing fears over the apparent boldness of the gunmen and the vulnerability of security formations in the area.

However, authorities in Niger State were yet to issue an official statement on the latest attack as of the time of filing this report.
