Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney offered a revealing portrait of diplomatic life beside America’s volatile leader, praising Donald Trump as a very successful politician while candidly admitting that navigating relations with the US President presents extraordinary challenges.
According to a report made by Anadolu English on Thursday, 5 March, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney while speaking at the Australian think-tank Lowy Institute, acknowledged Trump’s political talents while exposing the strain that has developed between longtime allies over tariffs and trade disputes.
He also acknowledged the electoral reality that many foreign leaders struggle to accept, stating “He’s president for reasons. He’s had success in other areas. He’s eminently, you know, elected twice. You would say, elected three times,” counting Trump’s two Presidential victories, and his influence over a third Republican nomination.
The Canadian Premier also described President Donald Trump as a very successful politician, very special, revealing that Trump appreciates, particularly in private, being direct and discussing issues and being clear where your position is.
Prime Minister Mark Carney went further to say “You don’t want to say anything in public that you can’t back up,” highlighting the risks of rhetorical escalation when dealing with a President who takes public statements seriously and responds forcefully to perceived disrespect.
He also drew a sharp distinction between Trump’s private and public personas, noting the President is quite different in private; he was more interested in allies viewpoint on various things in private, at the same time suggesting that beneath the bombastic public image exists a leader capable of genuine engagement, and interested in hearing perspectives from foreign counterparts.
Carney also indicated that Trump paves the way to work through things, implying that productive negotiation remains possible despite public tensions.
