In an interview with Daily Independent on Friday, March 6, 2026, Otunba Segun Sowunmi is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has spoken about political power and democracy in Nigeria, stating that political power is not permanent and explained that those in power today will not stay in power forever.
Sowunmi said leaders must understand that leadership changes with time and added that democracy allows people to choose new leaders during elections, he encouraged politicians to focus on service rather than holding power alone.
He stressed that the duty of opposition parties is important, according to him, political groups must present alternative ideas to the public.
He said opposition should help citizens see different policy options, he believes this will strengthen democracy in the country.
The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party said criticism should be done carefully, he said politicians should criticise government actions when necessary, he said praise should be given when leaders do good work.
Sowunmi explained that balanced political discussion is good for national development, he said politicians should avoid spreading messages that create division among citizens and urged political actors to speak in ways that promote unity.
He said building national consensus is important for progress and explained that political groups should look for common ground when discussing national issues, he believes cooperation across party lines can help solve many problems facing the country.
Sowunmi called on Nigerian politicians to focus on policies that improve life for ordinary citizens, he said political competition should be about better ideas and development plans and added that democracy becomes stronger when leaders respect different opinions.
”Political power is not eternal; those ruling today will not rule forever. Our duty is to criticise where necessary, praise where appropriate, and build consensus for national progress,” he said.
