President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday wrote to the Nigerian Senate to seek the confirmation of his nomination of Retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar, as National Commissioner representing Adamawa at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tinubu’s request was contained in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The letter which was read by Akpabio at the plenary said that his request is in line with the provision of tge 1999 constitution as amended.
“In compliance with the provisions of section 154 of section 1 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Adm Jamila Abubakar Sadiq retired as Commissioner representing Adamawa state at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
“While I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously, please accept, the Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the letter read in part.
Similarly, the president, in a separate letter, sought the confirmation of Ismail Yusuf for appointment as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, (NAHCON) by the Nigerian Senate.
Tinubu, in the letter, said that the request for the confirmation of the appointment was in accordance with the provisions of section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the appointment expeditiously, please accept, Mr Senate President and distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest regards,” he said.
Having read the letter, the Senate President referred the request to the Senate Committee on INEC for further legislative inputs.
He also directed that recommendations should be made available to the Senate within one week.
In addition, Akpabio referred the request for the confirmation of the NAHCON chairman to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative inputs.
In the same vein, he also directed that the committee report back to plenary in one week.
